Hurtigruten: sailing the coast of Norway for the last 125 years and the creator of the safest, greenest, most advanced expedition ship ever created.  These ships are positioned as providing a ‘comfortable base camp. “The luxury is in the experience, I wouldn’t be in a tuxedo in Antarctica.” – Hurtigruten’s ceo Daniel Skjeldam.

Scenic Eclipse: sets the water mark high with its first ocean-going ship, featuring two seven-seat helicopters and a custom-built six-passenger submarine – along with custom-built kayaks, Zodiacs and dive gear onboard.

All-inclusive, she sports six upscale dining rooms for her 228 passengers, a 464-square metre spa, and indoor and outdoor plunge pools. Next year in Antarctica, Scenic will take advantage of the two twin-engine helicopters to whisk passengers on a 45-minute flight to parts of this polar region no other cruise passenger has ever visited.

The ship has redundancy of every major system, even a duplicate engine room, and the highest possible ice class rating for a passenger ship – Polar Class 6 (Ice Class 1A Super), to ensure everyone gets back to civilization. All suites have verandahs and butler service – not just the owner’s suite, which measures 232 square metres.

Crystal’s first polar-class mega-yacht, Crystal Endeavor, will have two helicopters and two seven-person submarines, the requisite kayaks, Zodiacs and dive gear, plus a recompression chamber, a multi-person all-terrain vehicle (ATV), a SEABOB underwater scooter and a Remote Operated Vehicle to see underwater wrecks.

It's not all about Antarctica...

Scenic Eclipse’s first sailings will be from Athens to Venice however passengers will see these destinations from a new angle with stops in smaller villages, and with more active immersive excursions. For example in Dubrovnik, cruisers can explore Lokrum island by kayak; and a kayak circumnavigation of the small volcanic island of Staffa is offered on Scenic’s Discover the British Isles itinerary.

The new world is also in the expeditionary crosshairs...

Silversea’s Americas’ Pacific Coast sailings will include itineraries between Vancouver and San Diego that include small sea villages on Anacortes and Cypress Island, as well as visits to Mount St. Helens and an exploration of the locavore scene in San Francisco.

From Sightseeing to 'Sightbeing'...

Silverseas’s newest expedition ship, Silver Cloud was part of the cruise line’s traditional fleet for 24 years but transformed into a luxury ice-class vessel fit for polar exploration at the end of last year. It is now equipped with kayaks, zodiacs and a photo studio where passengers can learn to edit their pictures. Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre says: “As the first ship in our luxury fleet, it makes sense that she should continue her career as our first vessel to truly bridge the gap between luxury and expedition cruising.”
